Bart will also give a short talk on his own work and we’ll have a presentation by Steve Bates, a gentleman working in Montreal with a variety of forms, not least of which is a focus on sound, public spaces and whose worked with the electromagnetic spectrum. Steve Bates
Steve Bates is a media artist, musician, and audio technician. After stumbling through early noise making adventures in punk rock bands, Steve developed an interest in more experimental forms of organizing sound into improvised and composed music, radio, and installation projects. This expanded notion of working with sonic material eventually lead to founding a sound art festival in Winnipeg, Send + Receive: A Festival of Sound, which he directed for 8 years. He is currently living in Montréal and is the Sound Coordinator at Hexagram Institute for Research/Creation in Media Arts and Technologies and in the MFA – Open Media program, both based at Concordia University.
Bart Woodstrup
Bart Woodstrup’s eco-related artwork began in 1995 with his film “You
Cannot Survive the End of the World” which was produced for the first
annual World Population Film and Video Festival. His current work investigates the relationship between environmental issues and new technology - specifically, the cultural integration of these issues and technologies. He enjoys hacking solar powered LED lawn lamps, authoring data visualization software, and dreaming of ways to power his plethora of electronic gadgets carbon neutrally.
Bart’s goals are to understand and manipulate the aesthetics, semiotics, and narratives of various time-based media. His work takes the form of traditional musical composition, real-time interactive audio/video performance, multimedia installation and networked experience. He holds a Masters of Music from Northern Illinois University and a Masters of Fine Art from Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute.
